Matt Talbot is the patron of people struggling with alcoholism, addictions, substance abuse, and those seeking sobriety. This is grounded directly in authoritative sources including
🌟 What he is patron of
Alcoholics — He is universally invoked by those battling alcoholism.
People struggling with addictions — Including substance abuse and compulsive behaviors
Recovery & sobriety — Many recovery groups and prayer cards list him as patron of sobriety.
AA members / abstinence groups — He is associated with abstinence leagues and modern recovery communities.
🕊️ Why he became a patron of addiction recovery
Matt Talbot was a severe alcoholic from age 12 to 28.
In 1884, after hitting rock bottom, he took the pledge and remained sober for 40 years until his death.
His early years of sobriety were extremely difficult, and he relied on daily Mass, prayer, penance, and charity.
After his death, penitential chains were found under his clothing, revealing the depth of his spiritual discipline.
He was declared Venerable by Pope Paul VI in 1975.
📅 Feast Day
June 19 (commemorated by Franciscans and many recovery communities).
