Saints Jacinta and Francisco Marto were two young Portuguese siblings who, along with their cousin Lúcia dos Santos, witnessed the famous apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Fátima, Portugal, in 1917. Born in 1908 and 1910, respectively, they were typical village children who helped their families by tending sheep.
During the apparitions, the Virgin Mary asked the children to pray the rosary and make sacrifices for the conversion of sinners and peace in the world. Both Jacinta and Francisco died at a young age—Francisco in 1919 and Jacinta in 1920—due to the Spanish flu, but their devotion and sacrifices were recognized by the Catholic Church. They were canonized by Pope Francis on May 13, 2017, the 100th anniversary of the first apparition
Their story continues to inspire millions around the world, and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima remains a major pilgrimage site
