Our Lady of La Leche (Spanish: Nuestra Señora de la Leche y Buen Parto, meaning “Our Lady of the Milk and Happy Delivery”) is a title of the Virgin Mary that depicts her nursing the infant Jesus. The devotion is especially associated with pregnancy, childbirth, fertility, motherhood, and family life.

 Historical Background

• The devotion is considered one of the oldest Marian devotions, with imagery of Mary nursing Jesus appearing in early Christian art, including the Roman catacombs. 
• Its popularity grew in Spain, particularly during the late 16th century, before being brought to the Americas by Spanish settlers.  

In the United States

• Spanish settlers established a shrine to Our Lady of La Leche at Mission Nombre de Dios in St. Augustine, Florida, in the early 1600s.  
• The National Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche in St. Augustine is regarded as the oldest Marian shrine in the United States.  
• Pilgrims visit the shrine to pray for fertility, healthy pregnancies, safe childbirth, healing after pregnancy loss, and blessings for families. 

Feast Day

• The Diocese of St. Augustine celebrates a local feast day for Our Lady of La Leche on October 11.
