A scapular is a Catholic sacramental, most commonly the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It consists of two small pieces of cloth connected by cords and worn over the shoulders, with one piece resting on the chest and the other on the back. It is worn as a sign of devotion to God and to the Virgin Mary.

Why do people wear a scapular?

Catholics wear a scapular to:

  • Express devotion to Mary and trust in her prayers (intercession).
  • Remind themselves to live a faithful Christian life.
  • Share spiritually in the Carmelite tradition of prayer and holiness.

Is it a lucky charm?

No. Catholic teaching is that a scapular is not magic and does not guarantee salvation simply because someone wears it. It is a sacramental meant to encourage faith, prayer, and commitment to Christ.
